Speaking Frankly…

My second job out of seminary was in Dallas, Texas in a small church filled with 30-somethings with young kids.  One of my close friends there was Frank Johnson.  He too, ironically, was from the northwest as well and worked for a data systems firm.  We’d meet for coffee, connect as families, and do a 5:30 AM run together every morning.

“What made Frank stand out for me was his heart.  Whether we agreed or disagreed, whether he confronted someone or praised someone, whether he was serving his church or his community… his motive was always out of love.”Ken Mitchell

What I loved about Frank is that he like most of us was an average regular attender at church with a normal job who got connected in community and served Jesus.  What was unique about Frank is, if you asked me, “What one person outside of your family would you say helped you grow so others could See Jesus?”,  I would quickly answer Frank!

What made Frank stand out for me was his heart.  Whether we agreed or disagreed, whether he confronted someone or praised someone, whether he was serving his church or his community… his motive was always out of love.  And… you could tell!  To this day when I periodically re-connect with Frank (he’s moved back to his hometown in Spokane), he is still the same.  You can always See Jesus in Frank.  And our conversations often go that way… meaning towards Jesus!

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”Matthew 5:16 (ESV)

So if I can speak “frankly” during our See Jesus campaign, let’s all not forget the purpose that no matter what we do we want others to See Jesus in us!
